Wigan Fair
For the really brave, or foolhardy,
there’s always the boxing booth. Old pros will offer to take on
the young buck who fancies his chances over three rounds. With a
courage based on a mixture of beer and encouragement from his
mates, our hero is more likely to come away with a bloodied nose
than the pound note for lasting the distance.
Even in the gentler areas of the fair, the
music blares out as dad tries to win a goldfish at the coconut
shy. What sort of glue did they use to hold them on? No-one really
minded. It was part of the fun of the fair. It’s 1948 in the
market square in Wigan and the fairs in town. |
