1948 The Market Square in Wigan and the
Fairs in Town
Silcock Brothers’ fair has come to town.
From this jumble of trucks, cables, iron and steel will rise a
real centre of excitement for young and old alike. By nightfall,
the fair will be in full swing. As you walk towards the sea of
lights, hand in hand with your sweetheart, the noise starts to
roll over you.
The air is filled with the excited squeals
of the girls on the waltzers, as the fairground lads spin them
ever more quickly. How do they keep balance as they jump form one
to another, collecting the money for the ride from outstretched
fingers?
Next to them are the dodgems. There
overhead bars spark in the darkness as the power is turned on. The
lads drive their machines into the side of the one containing the
lasses who will be the subject of their chat up lines at the
toffee apple and candyfloss stall later on.
