Daisy Nook

When out bicycling near Daisy Nook, an acquaintance of Mr Lowry saw the artist and asked him what he was doing. Lowry explained that 'he was doing a painting and had forgotten the outline of the background. He took out of his pocket an envelope on the back of which he had drawn the pump house and tall chimney...'

The site of the fair has become smaller over the years although it still takes place on Good Friday and is still run by the Silcock Family.

In 1855, Ben Brierly wrote 'A Day Out' in Daisy Nook Sketches. The location was based on the riverside village of Waterhouses in the Parish of Ashton-under-Lyne. People from the area and beyond were drawn to the rural spot on the River Medlock which became known as Daisy Nook.
