The Emerson Organ
This 65 Key Gavioli was recommended to Mr Silcock's father by
the firm Wright & Holmes, organ builders of Manchester for the
quality of the music it produced.
In 1940, Herbert was taken by his father to
Barrow in Furness to meet Mr John Emerson with the intention of
trying to buy the organ but although he was willing to show the
pair the organ, he would not play it as it was a Sunday.
John had no desire to sell the organ and when
he died, it first passed to his brother Ernie and later to Ernie's
wife Rose.
Herbert had kept in touch with the Emerson
family over the years. After a few years Rose was ready to sell
the organ and Herbert bought it from her.
When the Gavioli was acquired it was very
tired and has been given a complete overhaul by Kevin Meayers.
